FAQs

Answers to key questions about the Sunpura GridBox: multi-battery systems, three-phase expansion, EV charging, installation, additional costs and grid-connection requirements.

Suitability & installation

5
Do I need a Sunpura GridBox if I only use one battery system?

Usually not. GridBox is not required for a single compatible battery system. It becomes relevant when you move to a larger multi-unit or three-phase configuration, or when a supported EV-charging setup is part of the system design.

What is the difference between wireless expansion and GridBox?

Supported smaller Sunpura configurations can use wireless multi-system coordination. GridBox is the central connection equipment for larger grid-tied setups that need multiple units, a three-phase architecture or supported EV-charging integration. The correct route depends on the battery model, system topology and installation.

Who is the Sunpura GridBox intended for?

GridBox is intended for compatible larger Sunpura systems where several battery units need to be connected centrally, including single-phase or three-phase parallel architectures and supported EV-charging scenarios. It is not a default requirement for every home battery installation.

Can I install the GridBox myself?

GridBox is electrical connection equipment for higher-power grid-tied systems. In the UK, the installation and associated distribution-board, three-phase or EV-charging work should be assessed and carried out by a suitably qualified electrician. Your installer should also confirm the applicable DNO connection process.

Should my consumer unit and electrical installation be checked before purchase?

Yes. Depending on the property, additional protection devices, cabling, distribution-board work or other electrical changes may be required. A pre-installation assessment helps identify technical requirements and additional costs before you order.

Three-phase & EV charging

4
Can GridBox be used with an EV charger?

The current GridBox specification supports compatible single-phase and three-phase EV-charging scenarios, including up to 7 kW single-phase and 22 kW three-phase charging. The usable rating depends on the charger, property supply, protective devices and complete system design, so the installation must be checked before purchase.

What do the blue and red connections represent?

They distinguish supported single-phase 230 V and three-phase 400 V connection routes. The correct connection depends on the GridBox version, the property supply and the connected load. Follow the current installation documentation rather than selecting a connection by colour alone.

What power ratings does the GridBox support?

The current GridBox brochure specifies up to 22 kW three-phase grid input and up to 22 kW three-phase output, with a maximum three-phase output current of 32 A. Supported single-phase EV charging is specified at 7 kW. Actual usable power depends on the connected batteries, EV charger, property supply and installation limits.

Does GridBox itself optimise dynamic electricity tariffs?

GridBox is connection equipment rather than the tariff-optimisation engine. In a compatible Sunpura system, metering, battery control and supported software features can use tariff information to influence charging and discharging. Any saving depends on the tariff, electricity use, solar generation and system configuration.

System & control

3
Does GridBox require additional communication cables for grid-tied parallel operation?

The current GridBox brochure states that grid-tied parallel operation does not require additional communication cables. The electrical installation must still follow the current GridBox documentation and applicable UK requirements.

Can GridBox be used with Sunpura metering and app control?

GridBox forms part of a wider Sunpura energy system. Metering and software features are provided by the compatible batteries, meters and control components in the installation. Available monitoring and automation therefore depend on the complete system configuration rather than GridBox alone.

Can I add more compatible battery units later?

The current GridBox specification supports grid-tied parallel operation of up to six compatible units. If you expand later, have the installer check the resulting power, capacity, protection settings and whether the DNO or other installation information needs to be updated.

Costs, grid connection & support

4
Can there be additional installation costs?

Yes. Additional cabling, protection devices, distribution-board work, wall penetrations or EV-charger integration may be required depending on the property. Have a suitably qualified electrician assess the installation before purchase if you need an accurate installed-cost estimate.

Does the system need DNO notification or approval?

It depends on the final UK grid-connected configuration. Your installer should determine the appropriate DNO process for the combined generation and storage system, including any existing solar PV. GridBox does not remove those connection requirements.

What is the GridBox ingress-protection rating?

GridBox is specified as IP54 and designed for wall mounting. Install it in an environment permitted by the current installation manual. IP54 is not a blanket statement that every exposed outdoor location is suitable.

Which GridBox specifications are most relevant?

Current brochure highlights include grid-tied parallel operation for up to six compatible units, up to 22 kW three-phase grid input and output, 32 A maximum three-phase output current, six Sunpura inputs rated up to 3.6 kW each, 230 V battery-side input, 230/400 V load connection, IP54 protection and wall mounting. Listed weight is 16.4 kg. Always use the latest datasheet for installation design.
